Alexander Cohr Pachai, AM.AIRAH, has been active in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps since 1978. His apprenticeship was successfully ended by installing a heat pump in 1981. Since then, Alex has held a number of senior positions within the industry and is now an independent consultant working out of Denmark.
Trends in the global refrigeration and heat pump markets – from a contractor's perspective
The Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment now require refrigeration and heat pump manufacturers to prioritize low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. This shift aligns with a global push to reduce environmental pollution, though challenges remain.
Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), used as refrigerants, break down into stable compounds like trifluoracetic acid (TFA), which are considered “forever chemicals.” The industry is exploring alternatives like ethane and ethene, which avoid problematic fluorine compounds.
In Europe, over 95% of new domestic refrigerators use R600a (iso-butane), with the transition largely successful. For commercial systems, propane (R290) is gaining traction, offering lower costs and no regulatory limits, though challenges remain.
The industry is ready for change, but investors need clarity on timing and direction. Conflicting interests and resistance to change create uncertainty, complicating efforts to address energy efficiency, pollution, and climate change.
