Richard J. Shaughnessy, Ph.D., has served as Director of the University of Tulsa’s Indoor Air Quality Research Program (TUIAP) in the Department of Chemical Engineering since 1991. His studies have focused on particulate research, air cleaner evaluation, indoor chemistry, school studies, asthma/housing research, and resolution and remediation of bioaerosol-related problems.
He was the contributing author to the 1999 ACGIH book on Bioaerosols: Assessment and Control, and contributing author and section editor of AIHA 2008 document on Recognition, Evaluation, and Control of Indoor Mold. He has been a primary contributor to, and reviewer of, IICRC Standards S500 and S520 since the onset. As a past President of The International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), As Director of Indoor Air Research he’s led various research initiatives and projects both across the United States and internationally, including in Scandinavia, Southern Europe, South Africa, China, and Singapore.
Dr. Shaughnessy is experienced in field research in homes and associated measurements/tools related to IAQ and moisture. Currently he is the Principal Investigator of multiple grants focusing on mold in the built environment, schools and cleaning efficacy. He also served as Vice-President of the ISIAQ global conference in Hawaii, in 2024.
