About Mohamed Mahmoud
Mohamed is a Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University of Turin. Currently pursuing a PhD study at UNSW in Australia.
As an engineer, he has a keen interest in improving indoor air quality using CFD simulations. He has spent 8 years in academia and industry addressing the ventilation settings in built environments. Since commencing his PhD studies at UNSW, his research has focused on enhancing air quality in various indoor spaces to mitigate airborne transmission diseases, particularly in classrooms and aged care facilities. This involves measuring concentrations of carbon dioxide and aerosols in the air.

Real-time infection risk assessment using aerosol measurements in a classroom with and without HEPA filtration
Placing HEPA filters helps mitigate airborne disease transmission in indoor environments. This study evaluates real-time infection risk in a classroom with and without HEPA filtration using aerosol measurements. CFD simulations are conducted and applied to a modified Wells-Riley model to estimate infection risk, occupancy time, and generate spatiotemporal risk maps. Results show HEPA filters enhance air mixing, with the lowest risk using three filters and the highest in the stale air scenario.
